The students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has again this year mourned and remembered George Yemi Iwilade, popularly called Afrika and four others, who were gunned down by Black Axe cultists on July 10th, 1999.
Following reports of the incident, it was gathered that OAU massacre happened two decades and a year ago, when series of murders and shooting occurred as the Black Axe confraternities invaded into the campus at 4:30am to terrorise the students.
In the news obtained by Daily News Nigeria, total number of 40 members of the cultists in black outfit with masks murdered five and left 11 students injured.
According to the escaped students, Lanre Adeleke, the major target narrated that he jumped out after heard gunshots and likewise Kegites escaped unharmed as Afrika was the only Students’ Union of Law Faculty and butchered with axe to confirm his dead, moreover, other fours students were unfortunate victims.
Thousands of social media users and in particular, the OAU students mourn as today mark another year of remembrance the OAU students received freedom of movement in the campus to date.
“Today makes it exactly 21 years since Afrika and 4 other heroes laid down their lives to give us the peaceful cult-free OAU we all enjoy today, rest in peace.
“Some martyrs paid the ultimate price so that OAU can be safe for us. We remember today Afrika,Eviano,Ajiteru,Oke and Godfrey”, tweets read.
