The Federal Government and Association of Staff Union of Universities have unsettled argument over underpaid Pay As You Earn (PAYE) Tax and BVN submission of some ASUU members.
The Federal Government exposed the depts recently and also revealed that ASUU enrolled some dead members into the Integrated Personnel Information System (IPPIS) for salary payment.
These acts have caused the government to reveal them before it gets worse than ever imagined.
Recall that ASUU went on 2 weeks warning strike over delay in salary payment before Covid-19 Virus came in and lockdown started.
In response and reaction to the strike, the Federal Government calculated and resulted in the underpaid PAYE Tax.
Also recap that during the 2 weeks warning strike, the Federal Government demanded the members BVN for salary payment, however, failed the BVN test and details have been forwarded to the universities for the necessary correction and update.
In the statements from the Office of Accountant General of the Federation, it was explained that BVN submission is mandated because it is a way of confirming all account numbers of the higher institutions that are sent to IPPIS were forwarded to the relevant agencies for validation and confirmation, however, it is saddening that over thousands of ASUU members tampered with their information.
However, The Federal Government thereby warn ASUU that any payment that is not approved by the Salary, Income and Wages Commission (SIWC) will be regarded as illegal payment.
Relatively, FG urged all tertiary Institutions that the government has put stop to unnecessary payment, nevertheless, PAYE Tax should be paid on or before the due date.
