Wike demolishes hotels
The governor of Rivers State, Nigeria, Nyesom Wike, has ordered hotels to be demolished for violating the rules and regulation to eradicate the spread of Covid-19.
According to reports gathered, Wike had warned residents who failed to comply with the order be penalized.
Recently, Wike ordered all hotels and other Services company to lockdown to curb the spread of the virus, however, some hotels violated the rules which led to Prodest Hotel, Eleme, and Etemeteh Hotel, Oone be demolished.
In the news obtained by Daily News Nigeria, Wike accompanied by armed security personnel to supervise the demolition of the hotels.
Nigerians have however castigated Wike’s action as it was harsh.
Following tweets on Twitter, many hope that the energy Governor Wike is using to enforce the lockdown, he is also using it to increase testing and isolation centre capacity in Rivers state as fighting the virus is not about being performative but being readily effective.
“I don’t get it. Where does Gov Wike derive his power to demolish hotels for lockdown violation? Nothing in S.5 (2) CFRN 1999 and S.8 Quarantine Act gives him such powers to assault citizens right under S.44 CFRN 1999. Nothing”, @AbdulMahmud lamented.
Adding that Wike has shown a preview on how tyrants can misuse the Infectious Disease Control Bill. They will arbitrarily destroy people’s properties. Most of our Political leaders are tyrants, we should never give them room whatsoever to flex their muscles.
On the other hand, many supported the action as they asked the rhetorical question, why is he a tyrant? as the warning was issued and the punishment was voiced out openly but people disobeyed. it’s common to reward for disobedience.
