Chelsea aim to cut ties with Danny Drinkwater immediately after his loan move to Reading runs out in June, as reported by the Times.
The midfielder was sent to Reading on the penultimate day of the transfer window.
“I think we’re in the same place – where I could do with a club like Reading, and the club could do with a player like me. I think it’s a good fit and hopefully we can start the good work soon!”
It will be Drinkwater’s fourth spell away from Chelsea since he signed from Leicester City in 2017 for £35m (BBC).
During that period, the Englishman has had highly underwhelming stints at Burnley, Aston Villa and Turkish side Kasimpasa.
Drinkwater drowned out at Chelsea
Even more disappointing for Blues fans, however, is the lack of impact he has had on the current Champions League holders.
Drinkwater’s appearance tally for Chelsea stands at a measly 23, less than half Timo Werner has achieved in just one campaign with the club.
Injuries have played a part in Drinkwater’s downfall, as have off-the-field misdemeanours.
However, it always felt like a giant leap from Leicester to the Blues, despite the midfielder playing a key role in the Foxes’ seemingly impossible Premier League triumph of 2015/16.
