While 5G has been appraised as one of the most significant breakthroughs since its inception in 2019 in the technology industry due to its distinctive feature to operate faster and more efficiently than its predecessor 4g and its variants, renewed surge of claims of its adversity on human health especially its hypothetical relationship to the outbreak of covid-19 is despicable.
On April 4 2020, there were fires at masts in Birmingham, Liverpool and Melling in Merseyside in the UK. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said it is investigating a blaze it extinguished at a 5G mast in the village of Melling, north of Liverpool, on Friday night, according to a BBC report.
Allusion of the recent outbreak of covid-19, also known as a coronavirus – “a pneumonia-like” disease that broke out in Hubei Province in China, more specifically in Wuhan in 2019 – to the inception of 5G is a reflection of probable and ostensible argument tabled by the critics of the new technology during its nascent period.
As of 5 April 2020, more than 1.19 million cases of coronavirus have been reported in more than 200 countries and territories, resulting in more than 64,500 deaths. More than 246,000 people have recovered.
The presumed adversity of the technology on health and environment is not a new debate. In August 2019, a court in the USA decided that 5G technology will not be deployed without environmental impact and historic preservation reviews. Also In April 2019, the city of Brussels in Belgium blocked a 5G trial due to radiation legislations. In Geneva, Switzerland, a planned upgrade to 5G was ceased for the same reason.
While the advent of 5G and the outbreak of pandemic CORONAVIRUS may have simultaneously incepted in the same epoch, there exists no significant relationship between the two. Though, CORONAVIRUS prevails in the same era with the newest technology, variants of the pandemic had existed long before, when a fast technology like this was a figment of our imagination.
The conspiracy theory of the relationship between 5G and covid-19 has always been in two strands:
• The first argues that 5G emits some radiation that subsequently makes our immune system weak and has a significant role in the susceptibility of people to coronavirus.
• The other, a much weaker view proposes that the new technology is capable of sharing this virus from one person to another.
But these arguments are falsifiable with the nature of a virus. A virus cannot stay outside human being for a long period of time because they lack metabolism by which they cannot reproduce. They usually force the host cell to reproduce the viral copies. With this argument, the two strands of the theory are negated as it is scientifically inexplicable to transmit the virus electronically.
This view is further exemplified by Dr Simon Clarke, associate professor in cellular microbiology at the University of Reading who asserted that Radio waves can disrupt our physiology as they heat us up, meaning our immune system can’t function. But 5G radio waves are very small and they are never strong enough to impact the immune system.
Coronaviruses had been discovered in the early 1930s when an acute respiratory infection of chickens was explained to be caused by infectious bronchitis virus. Relatively, In the 1940s, two more animal coronaviruses, mouse hepatitis virus and communicable gastroenteritis virus, were discovered.
Human coronaviruses were isolated in the 1960s. The earliest ones studied were from human patients with the common cold, that was later named human coronavirus. Categories of other human coronaviruses had been discovered, including SARS-CoV in 2003, HCoV NL63 in 2004, HKU1 in 2005, MERS-CoV in 2012, and SARS-CoV-2 in 2019. Most of these illnesses have involved serious respiratory tract infections. The preceding discovery of similar viruses is a negation of the proposition that the new technology may have been the catalyst for the recent outbreak of the pandemic.
The premise that fatality rate of covid-19 is higher in developed countries like Italy and the United States of America, unlike in Africa where there exists low development of 5G, due of the widespread acceptance of the technology and the operation of its “destructive element” of radiation is feeble and incoherent with any empirical evidence. The phenomenon of high case mortality rate due to the pandemic is attributed to the higher median age in these countries – age that equally divides the population into two.
WHO reports in January that older people are susceptible and highly vulnerable to the coronavirus. Apart from the ones with underlying health conditions such as diabetes or bronchitis, which make them highly susceptible to the virus, only a few of people below age 50 have died due to covid-19 in these countries, while the elderly have died more. Additionally, some UK states with high cases of the virus are yet to roll out the 5G network, same picture in Iran where over 4, 000 people have died due to the complications of CORONAVIRUS despite the absence of the new technology.
Investigating the root of a pandemic by studying the index cases by Chinese scientists, most victims had links to the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market and the virus is thought to have a zoonotic origin. The virus that caused the outbreak is SARS-CoV-2, that is closely related to bat pangolin coronaviruses, and SARS-CoV itself.
While the origin of the pandemic is yet to be scientifically proven, with several conspiracy theories devoid of any empirical evidence tabling variety of answers, adduction of the outset of 5G to the outbreak of covid-19 and attempt to maintain a relationship between the two distinct phenomena is not only scientifically implausible but also a reflection of a faulty failed hypothesis.
